How to Make Protein Powder Smoothies

There are people who can benefit from protein powder smoothies.  Weight lifters and body builders need high amounts of protein to build muscle mass.  Vegetarians and vegans usually struggle with protein deficiency because they do not eat meat.  For these individuals and for everybody else, smoothie recipes that include protein powder give an extra boost of protein in the daily diet.

Protein powder smoothies are health drinks that provide proteins without loading up on fats and carbohydrates.  They’re as easy to make as any other smoothie. You only need a blender to blend all the ingredients in a protein smoothie.

Smoothie Recipes with Protein Powders

Many protein powder drinks do not really taste that great.  But when you make it into a protein powder smoothie and add a few flavors, you’ll have a great-tasting beverage.  Fruits can be added to the protein smoothie for extra vitamins and phytonutrients.  A high-protein smoothie is an excellent drink before or after working out.

It’s easy to make a protein powder smoothie.  If you have a favorite smoothie recipe you can add whey protein and other protein supplements to it.  You may have to add extra liquid to reach the desired consistency.

Some protein powders have a distinct taste that may be difficult to mask with the other ingredients.  Vanilla flavored protein powders are easier to combine with other flavors.

Protein Powder Smoothie with Soy

  • 1 or 2 scoops vanilla flavored protein powder
  • 1 cup soy milk
  • 1 cup silken tofu
  • 1/2 cup crushed ice

Alternative Protein Sources

Some protein powders may not be suitable for vegetarians and vegans.  The good news is there are alternative protein sources suitable for your dietary requirements.

  • Silken tofu makes your smoothies thick and creamy.  It goes well with fruit smoothies.  Vegans can substitute tofu for yogurt in a smoothie recipe.
  • Soy milk, almond milk or other nut milks can be added as liquid base in a smoothie.  They add more protein to the beverage.
  • Peanut butter, almond butter and other nut butters contain plant-based proteins and essential fatty acids.  They go well with frozen bananas in a smoothie recipe.
